World record wedding
Monday, February 8, 1999

SEOUL, South Korea (Associated Press) -- About 12,000 newlywed couples
in white dresses and dark suits, cheered in unison yesterday at Seoul's
Chamsil Olympic Stadium. The cheer ended a two-hour wedding arranged by
the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church.

A spokesman said the ceremony, in which 30,000 married couples also
renewed vows, was the largest wedding ever.

One groom said there was nothing strange about meeting his bride just
two days ago.

"It is the Messiah that chose my bride," he said.

Moon paired them by examining their photographs.

About 80% of the couples in yesterday's ceremony were South Koreans.
But there were people from 100 countries, including Canada. The couples
paid to attend.
