HONDURAS
The 6th Friendship America's Project
JULY 2-14, 1999

Nature of the Project

The RYS will be working to help the people of Honduras who have suffered
greatly as a result of hurricane Mitch. The Ministry of Social Projects has
targeted varies work projects in the Tegucigalpa area that require teams of
volunteers to work on. The work will not require specific skills but if you
have special skills please inform us so we can utilize them when possible.
The RYS will stay together at a central location in the capital while we
have our orientation and work portion of the project. For the closing days
of RYS, a more reflective time, we will travel to the coast and spend time
at the scenic town of Tela. In addition to the normal RYS schedule a special
request has been given us for participants to gather any used clothing they
can bring so we can see that it reaches the numerous people that are without
such clothing.

Participant Expenses

The cost of participation in the RYS is $ 200 for students from North
America. This expense will cover food, housing, transportation during the
project and program fees (museums, admissions etc.) We will meet the
participants at the airport if we receive their arrival information and come
on the scheduled arrival dates. Transportation to the airport for those that
are departing at the conclusion of the program will be arranged.
Participants are expected to cover the cost of their own air travel.

International Transportation

You will be expected to pay and arrange for your own international
transportation. If you need help on this we have worked with GO WORLD TRAVEL
and they can be of assistance in helping you find the best price and times
for this trip. They can be reached at 800 327-3667 or 212 967-8080 or
through E-mail at: go-world@worldnet.att.net. International participants
should arrive at the airport in Tegucigalpa where they will be met by the
RYS staff. International departures can be from either Tegucigalpa or San
Pedro Sula. The final days of the RYS will be spent on the coastal town of
Tela which is much closer to San Pedro Sula which also has an international
airport and American Airlines and some others fly there regularly. Otherwise
participants will travel by bus to Tegucigalpa and be brought to the airport
at the time of departure.

Additional Sightseeing Adventure

After the closing RYS program on the morning of July 15th an optional
sight-seeing adventure will be planned for those who wish to join us. The
program will include things such as boat rides, scuba diving, nature walks,
etc. Those that wish to attend this optional program will remain in Tela on
the evenings of the 15th and 16th and then depart. The San Pedro Sula
airport is the closest but transport will also take you to Tegucigalpa if
that is where you would like to depart from. We are inviting those that wish
to stay in Honduras for a few extra days of fun and outdoor adventure to
take part in this program. The cost will be an additional $140 which will
cover hotel, meals, bus transportation, the cost of boat rides, scuba and
other planned programs.

After the RYS concludes on July 15, if you wish to travel on your own and
not take part in this program, you are free to return to Tegucigalpa with
the RYS or travel on your own. Some RYS participants may want to travel to
the Mayan ruins which can be reached by bus from Tela and will not be part
of our optional program.

Weather

Tegucigalpa is in the mountains of Honduras, so the heat is not extreme. The
climate is very warm in the day and it can get cool at night.
