Try this experiment: pronounce the vowels
(like "oo" in "moon") and
(like "ee" in "meet") one after another:
Now pronounce them with a little bit less time between each vowel:
And closer still...
If you blend the vowels together, it will turn into the sound of the
word "we" (which is romanized as "wi"):
